Fatal accident on the R38 outside Mbombela requires search-and-rescue operatives to access scene

The accident involved an articulated truck that lost control and went over an embankment of the road between Mbombela and eManzana.

One person was confirmed dead while one was treated as a priority three patient following an accident involving an articulated truck that went off the R38 past the Nelshoogte Nature Reserve outside Mbombela on Saturday afternoon, October 12.

Martin Jeffrey of Emer-G-Med said they received an alert of the accident at about 14:43 to attend the scene.

“On scene, the articulated heavy motor vehicle was found to have lost control and went over the embankment of the road,” he said.

Jeffrey said Search and Rescue South Africa (SARZA) Lowveld was activated for access to the scene down the slope to recover the body and to search for a possible third person involved in the accident.

The chairman of SARZA Lowveld, Andrew Geldenhuys, confirmed the operation.

The R38 between Mbombela and eManzana is not closed. However, motorists are advised to approach with caution or rather use alternative routes.
