Annual Mpumalanga Ingoma Festival celebrates heritage

During the show, the learners demonstrated a deep passion and understanding of their heritage.

As the country commemorates Heritage Month, the Department of Education (DoE) hosted the Provincial Ingoma Festival, a vibrant showcase of Mpumalanga’s rich cultural heritage.

According to www.gov.za, Heritage Day, which is commemorated on September 24, recognises and celebrates the cultural wealth of the nation. South Africans celebrate the day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of the country. Various events are staged throughout the country to commemorate this day.

The DoE’s event was hosted at Church on the Hill from September 13 to 14. This year’s festival featured talented learners from primary and secondary schools across the province, each eager to share their unique cultural expressions.

The young participants demonstrated a deep passion and understanding of their cultural roots, delivering unforgettable experiences that delighted audiences of all ages.

The MEC for education, Cathy Dlamini, said: “It is through the protection and promotion of our cultural diversity that we fortify our social fabric and foster national unity. As a government and a people, we must remain committed to ensuring that this diversity is celebrated in every aspect of public life. It is our duty to create policies that ensure the preservation and promotion of every cultural identity within our society.”

“Your efforts were not just about preparing them to perform on stage; you are shaping young minds, instilling confidence and fostering a deep sense of pride in their cultural heritage. Your commitment to this festival is a testament to your belief in the power of education beyond the classroom – a belief that education is not just about academic success, but also just about nurturing well-rounded individuals who have a great sense of self and understanding,” she said.
