Man in possession of suspected stolen cash arrested at Oshoek Border

A South African man was arrested for being in possession of R425k that was found to have been undeclared as per the FIC Act 38 of 2001.

The Border Management Authority officials recently arrested a 39-year-old South African man who attempted to jump over the fence at the Oshoek Border Post to eSwatini.

The man had a black plastic bag and was caught and searched. The officials found a cash amount of R424 800 and seized it. The matter was handed over to the Mpumalanga Hawks in Secunda.

According to the provincial Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, the man was interrogated.

“The suspect was asked about origin of the money and its destination. He could not give a clear explanation. It was also discovered that the money had not been declared as per the FIC [Financial Intelligence Centre] Act 38 of 2001 in terms of sections 54 and 30. He was then arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property. The money was seized and booked in the SAP 13 [storeroom]. The suspect is expected to appear in the Elukwatini Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, September 25, while the investigation continues,” Sekgotodi said.
