The Kasi Women’s Parliament celebrated Women’s Month in style at the Elshaddai Tabernacle International on Thursday August 20.
South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956.

The Kasi Women’s Parliament group was started with the aim of enhancing township economy. According to Portia ka Olga Mathebula, the Kasi Women’s Parliament’s supervisor, the group comprised of the speakers identified to address the organisation’s various issues.
On the day of the event, they all went out to celebrate, dressed up according to the colour scheme of white and pink.
“The group focused on the need for women to collaborate to develop themselves and move beyond the trappings of poverty through venturing into business and ultimately become self-made business owners. Women were encouraged to forge ahead with community development programmes to break the barriers of poverty, thus improving their socio-economic conditions.”

Mathebula said the plight of people with disabilities was highlighted. “Challenges are experienced by blind women in respect of access to services. We discussed what can be done to avoid their daily difficulties.”
She said wellness issues that hinge around the effective management of cancer, as well as preventative measures, were discussed. Mathebula said as part of giving back, some less-fortunate families received food parcels.
