Department of Water urges public to conserve water during Mpumalanga’s Spring Day celebrations

According to Themba Khoza of the Department of Water and Sanitation, it is important that everyone conserves water as the current levels are dropping.

The Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) Mpumalanga Provincial Operations Department called on the public to welcome Spring Day in a responsible manner and to refrain from wasting water, as every drop counts, seeing as water levels continue to drop in the watercourses. Spring Day is usually celebrated on September 1 every year.

On Thursday, August 29, Mpumalanga Provincial Operations said South Africa is a dry and water-scarce country in which every drop counts, as water has no substitute.

“This makes it critical that we always practise water conservation and use the available water wisely and sparingly in everything we do,” said the DWS’s communication officer, Themba Khoza.

Khoza said splashing one another with water in the name of welcoming spring on Sunday, September 1, might look fun, but it adds to water wastage and contributes to the loss of precious water, which the country cannot afford.

“It is high time that we strengthen water conservation initiatives, as spring comes with hot temperatures associated with high evaporation leading to less water availability. With climate change upon us, it is everyone’s responsibility to prevent water losses and contribute to sustainable water supply.”

He said everyone can play a part in water security by using water wisely and sparingly by repairing leaks and reporting ones in bulk pipelines to the relevant authorities, not leaving taps to run while washing your face or brushing teeth, filling kettles with just enough water for the specific needs, and using a bucket to wash a car.
“The DWS further reminds the public that the future and water security is in everyone’s hands, therefore it is crucial to always act in a responsible manner to ensure sustainable water supply for the current and future generations.”
