Nkomazi learners design smart board to make learning fun

Some learners of Sikhwahlane Secondary School created the board, called ‘Pride’ to assist in improving teaching and learning in their classrooms.

Following a recent drop in their science marks from 92.2% to 85%, the learners of Sikhwahlane Secondary School were encouraged to come up with a solution to bounce back.

This is when they thought of developing a science smart board called ‘Pride’ to help improve teaching and learning in their classrooms.

The board has various topics from which the learners can choose.

The smart board named ‘Pride’.

According to a teacher at the school, Tsepo Ngwenya, the smart board was designed by the school’s science club. He said when they were designing it, the learners wanted to create something that would make learning fun and interactive.

Ngwenya said due to a lack of resources, they used an old white board, old computer and other equipment they had available. They also had to raise funds for some parts, and others were even donated.

“We installed an Arduino chip and many other implements so the board has sound functions, and it works well.”

Ngwenya said the school hopes this board will attract sponsors who’ll will help them provide for the learners’ needs. “We need a science lab. When we get it, we will be able to improve our future science expo projects.

The reason why we thought of our science expo is because we have noticed that due to the lack of a proper lab, our projects are not up to standard,” he explained.

Ngwenya said they hope to also create a smart board for mathematics when the resources and equipment are made available.
