The accused was arrested and made his first court appearance today, August 22, and was remanded in custody.

An attempted murder accused, Innocent Sthembiso “Spoto” Maseko, appeared in the Carolina Magistrate’s Court today, August 22, following his arrest for allegedly setting alight a 22-year-old woman in Carolina. The woman was saved by neighbours and is in hospital.

The case was postponed to obtain legal representation for a formal bail hearing on Monday, August 26. Maseko was remanded in custody.

According to a Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the accused had allegedly poured some flammable liquid on the woman and set her alight in the early hours of Tuesday, August 20.

Mdhluli said the accused was traced and arrested a few hours later, on the same day of the incident.

“According to the report, neighbours were woken up by the sound of a woman screaming for help. They went out to investigate and saw the woman in agony, engulfed in flames, while her male companion reportedly poured liquid from a two-litre container on her. He realised the neighbours were coming to the woman’s rescue and fled the scene. The neighbours did their best to extinguish the fire and the woman was taken to the hospital for medical treatment,” he said.
