Siyakhula Primary School pupils receive scarves and beanies on Mandela Day

The ambassador of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, Christine Simelane, spread love and warmth to some schoolchildren.

In honour of Nelson Mandela Day, an avid giver and ambassador of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, Christine Simelane, distributed 240 winter scarves and 15 beanies to the pupils of Siyakhula Primary School in Pienaar on Thursday July 18.

“What a lovely day we had at the school in honour of Tata Madiba during our 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Secret Scarves Shh… outreach. We spread love and warmth to those in need, and the smiles of the recipients said it all,” she said.

“We appreciate the collective action for a good cause from all the Mbombela and White River Knitwits and the growing knitting team at Mtfophi Primary School in Daantjie, and my former learners for their labour of love when crocheting these scarves and beanies.”

The self-taught crocheter is a teacher at Mtfophi Primary School and is set on giving back to the Pienaar community in many ways, with the hope of elevating the education of local children. She not only gives lessons in the classroom, but also teaches crocheting skills to her learners and others who are interested.

“My knitting team includes schoolchildren, unemployed youth and grandmothers. I teach them skills to help them relieve stress, so that there is a continuous inheritance of this in future generations,” Simelane said.
