MEC for finance addresses Mpumalanga Provincial Treasury management team

During this meeting, various issues were discussed, including the role of Provincial Treasury.

The MEC for finance, Bonakele Majuba, said the Provincial Treasury must track every cent allocated to departments to ensure effective use of public finances. He addressed his first meeting with the Provincial Treasury’s management team on Tuesday July 2.

Majuba said he was informed that the Provincial Treasury did not incur any unauthorised, fruitless or wasteful expenditures during the financial year under review.

“This is truly music to my ears, and I am making a passionate plea that it remains so. We must also ensure that all institutions can account for every cent at their disposal. I agree entirely with the assertion that the Provincial Treasury must be everywhere. We must follow every programme and project and satisfy ourselves that public resources are used for the purpose they were appropriated for,” said Majuba.

He said their strategic focus remains that of supporting provincial departments, public entities and municipalities with policy guidance, and providing them with developmental budgets, improving revenue collection and management and improving oversight in keeping with the values of this department.
