Four suspects arrested for business robbery in Nhlazatshe

The four men were remanded in custody after their first court appearance on July 19, and are expected to be in court again on July 25.

Four suspects have been remanded in custody after they appeared in the Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court today, Friday July 19.

Mthokozisi Nkosi (32), Manqoba Malaza (28), Thando Malaza (23) and Penuel Masina (20) were arrested for business robbery in Nhlazatshe on Wednesday July 17, using a vehicle that belongs to a local tribal authority to flee the scene.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, they were arrested shortly after a business robbery was reported and a white Toyota Fortuner matching the description of the getaway vehicle was spotted.

“The vehicle with the four occupants was stopped and searched. The police recovered groceries, an undisclosed amount of cash and a 9mm Parabellum pistol. Preliminary investigations revealed that the items recovered were stolen during the robbery. It was further revealed that the recovered firearm was stolen from a police official in November 2023, and the vehicle is registered under a tribal authority that we cannot reveal as yet,” he said.

Nkosi also said the four suspects were arrested and charged for business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The police cannot rule out the possibility of adding other charges pending further investigation.

The suspects are expected to appear in court again on July 25 for formal bail application.
