Afrotraction creates platform for up-and-coming musicians

Unsigned.Vocalist is a platform aimed to uplift talented musicians, encourage a modern music culture, thus working alongside South Africa's renowned artist, Afrotraction.

The multi-award-winning Afro, neo soul and R&B musician and producer, Mzwandile Moya, affectionately known as ‘Afrotraction’, has dropped a new song under his newly launched project, Unsigned.Vocalist.

The song, titled “Angkhoni”, was released on June 9 and features the talented Mbalizethu Siluma, an unsigned vocalist from KwaThema in Springs, making her the first recording artist on this project.

The goal of Unsigned.Vocalist is to uplift talented upcoming artists across the country and in neighbouring ones such as eSwatini, Mozambique and Botswana.

“The project is aimed at giving unsigned singers an opportunity to create music on a professional level, to inspire and cultivate a collaborative culture within the Afro, neo soul and R&B genres and introducing more singers into the space as a vital measure towards music development for the culture and sound,” Moya said.

Siluma said it was an exciting and easygoing experience to work alongside Moya. “I have known him since 2016 and have done vocals for him for some of his songs. To work with him now on this project is a great opportunity. ‘Angkhoni’ is a romantic song about a man and woman who are so in love, they profess their undying love to each other.”

Siluma said she started singing in church and school. To acquire more skills to hone her singing ability, she joined church groups and did small music festivals, and was eventually introduced to jazz and African music, which also led to the above-mentioned genres.

“I love fresh sounds and this project encapsulates them. Old-school music is good. but these modern sounds are so outstanding, and people are yet to hear more from it,” she said.

Moya said a full album that features different upcoming musicians will be released from the project. “Those who would like to get such an opportunity as well should watch out for a series of public videos on my social media pages for instructions. One of them would be to upload a video of them singing one of my songs to secure a spot on the project.”

He said more music from the project will be released on specific Sundays during its progress.
