Persons living with blindness and deafness display their talents in Mbombela

This social event’s goal was to promote awareness and educate the community about those living with blindness or deafness.

Some talent was showcased during the Empowerment Fusion event at the Mbombela Civic Centre on Monday June 17.
The aim was to raise awareness and to inform the public about people living with blindness or deafness.

During the event, visually and hearing-impaired persons showcased their talents by doing performances such as singing, dancing and drama.

Zanele Sibande, an interpreter, said: “It is important for people living with blindness and those who are deaf to go out there and celebrate Youth Day. We are here today to show them love and appreciate them like everyone else.”

Detroit Nkambule, one of the performers, said: “I am glad that we as people living with disabilities can stand together and raise awareness, and for others to learn from us. I want people in communities to see that we can also do things like them.”He said this will earn them recognition not only in Mbombela, but also all over the province.

“We want to teach people in other provinces about the importance of raising awareness and holding events that will help us to develop economically. I am happy about this event and I wish there could be more ones like this in the future,” said Nkambule.

During an interview with Mpumalanga News, Prince Ngema, a facilitator of the Mpumalanga Blind Skills Hub, said: “This event has taught me that we as people living with blindness and deafness need one another. We, not being able to see or hear, does not mean we should just sit and not do anything.

I am happy that we could unite and welcome one another, and we got a chance to be recognised and be celebrated. For those who are sitting at home fearing to come out, I encourage them to go and enjoy themselves. Disability does not stop anyone from doing anything.”
