UPDATE: Violence instigator remanded in custody in Mbombela

Xolani Gregory Khoza was arrested after he had allegedly circulated a message on social media stating that the country should be closed down and the president removed.

The 36 year-old Xolani Gregory Khoza was remanded in custody by the Nelspruit District Court on Monday June 24 for incitement to commit terrorism, public violence and intimidation.

The case was postponed to Monday July 1 for formal bail application. Khoza remains in custody.

According to the Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, Khoza was arrested on Saturday when some members of the Nelspruit Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit and Crime Intelligence followed up information regarding a member of the public who was inciting public violence through social media, saying that the country must be shut down and the president, Cyril Ramaphosa, be removed.

He was charged with the contravention of Section 17 of the Riotous Assemblies Act 17 of 1965, Inciting Public Violence.

“Investigation was initiated and the suspect was identified and arrested for further contravening Section 14 of the Cybercrimes Act 19 of 2020, which says that any person who discloses, by means of an electronic communication, a data message to a person or group of persons or the public in general with the intention to incite violence shall be guilty as charged,” Sekgotodi said.
