Cyclist dead after being hit by bus on R40

The man was declared dead after his body was retrieved from under the bus. The road has since been cleared and opened to traffic.

A cyclist was hit by a Buscor bus at the Tiger Wheel & Tyre intersection in Mbombela today, June 18. The accident occurred at about 06:30.

According to the spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, it is unclear what caused the accident at this stage, however, investigations are under way.

“The man was declared dead by the paramedics after his body was retrieved from under the bus. He cannot yet be identified as we are still waiting to inform the next of kin. The scene has since been cleared and the road is now open to traffic after being closed for three hours,” he said.
Mmusi urged motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to always be cautious, and most importantly, obey the rules of the road to avoid unnecessary accidents.

Meanwhile Buscor spokesperson, Thoma Lubisi, said they are still gathering all the necessary information before they give a full comment regarding the incident.
