University of Mpumalanga professor obtains C3 NRF ratings
The university congratulated Prof Ferdinand Niyimbanira for this achievement, as this line is central to its goal of building a globally competitive science system in South Africa.
A professor of the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has obtained a C3 rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF).
Prof Ferdinand Niyimbanira is an associate professor in the School of Development Studies, Faculty of Economics, Development and Business Sciences.
On Monday, the university congratulated him for this achievement. The university said on its website that the NRF rating system is central to its goal of building a globally competitive science system in South Africa. According to uct.ac.za, most of the reviewers concur that Niyimbanira is an established researcher.

His research interests include (un)employment, underemployment and poverty studies, macroeconomic policies, financial inclusion, health economics, big data analysis, climate change, entrepreneurship and local economic development.
He is a member of the Economio Society of South Africa and the South African Association of Public Administration and Management.
He serves as faculty adviser of the Entrepreneurial Actions in Us (Enactus) team, mentoring to solve local problems in society using innovative local solutions.
He is the 2019 recipient of the UMP Engagement Excellence Award. His leadership role in community economic development projects by students for others has been widely recognised. He is the Enactus South Africa Faculty Adviser of the Year (2014 and 2020) and the recipient of the 2017 Senior Enactus South Africa Alumnus of the Year Award.

The 2019 award comes after he was assigned by the UMP’s vice chancellor,
Prof Thoko Mayekiso. He took the responsibility to make Enactus UMP known both on campus and nationwide as part of his engagement.
Furthermore, when he was a student his team represented the country in Singapore and Germany and won the Enactus National Championship twice (2008 and 2009).
The UMP’s spokesperson, Tlangelani Ubisi, said the university congratulates him on obtaining this rating.
