Counting of votes continues in Mpumalanga

Vote counting continues without any glitches, under the watch of party agents, independent candidate agents and observers.

The IEC in Mpumalanga is expected to conclude the counting of votes between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning (May 1 to 2).

The spokesperson of the Mpumalanga IEC, Thanduxolo Chembeni, said the counting of votes started last night, May 29, at about 21:00.

“Our officials are still counting the votes under the watch of party agents, independent candidate agents and observers to make sure that there is fairness. At the moment there are no glitches at the counting centres. We are expected to finish counting between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning because we need to submit everything to the national IEC for the official announcement of the election results on Sunday afternoon,” he said.

“We are aware that some people were not able to vote because they arrived late at the voting stations, and Section 24A of the Electoral Amendment Act affected some of the voters. But above all, those who were eligible to cast their vote were given a chance. For now, it is very difficult to give the exact turnout because, at some point, we were using the Voters’ Roll instead of the scanner,” he said.

By the time of going online, 19.11% of the votes had been counted.
