University of Mpumalanga council starts recruitment process for new vice-chancellor

This decision comes as the 10-year term of the current vice-chancellor will end in October. Prof Thoko Mayekiso will continue her duties in the interim.

The council of the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) started the recruitment process of a new vice-chancellor during its special council meeting on Wednesday May 22. The second term of office of the vice-chancellor, Prof Thoko Mayekiso, comes to an end in October this year.

The UMP’s spokesperson, Tlangelani Ubisi, said following careful consideration of the university’s statute and relevant policies, the council decided to commence with a recruitment process of a new vice-chancellor. In addition, the council has decided to retain Mayekiso’s services as an interim vice-chancellor for a limited period while they are engaged with the recruitment process.

“In making its decision, the council took into consideration the following issues: that the legal framework currently in place does not permit the vice-chancellor to serve a third term; and then there is the importance of continuity and to mitigate against disruptions to university operations.”

The UMP council’s chairperson, Sabelo Mahlalela, said: “As the council, we are pleased by the leadership Mayekiso has provided in the past 10 years. She has laid a solid foundation for the academic excellence at the UMP based on a sound value system. We are grateful Mayekiso has agreed to be available during this transitional period for a limited period while we are busy with the recruitment process. We are excited about the prospects of bringing aboard a new vice-chancellor to actualise our vision 2030.”

“I would like to express my appreciation to the council, the management committee of the UMP, the staff members and the students for their contribution to the Pioneering Journey Luhambo Lwemhlahlandlela. As the founding vice-chancellor of the university, I have witnessed the establishment, growth and many breakthroughs over the past 10 years. We have surely laid a firm foundation for the benefit of many generations yet unborn, who will find a thriving university they will be proud to join. I will work closely with the council during the transitional period to ensure continuity and sustainability as the UMP embarks on the next decade of excellence and creating opportunities,” said Mayekiso.
