Team Mpumalanga shines at 42.2km SA Championships

Mpumalanga’s over-40s team recently won a bronze medal at the ASA Marathon Championships held in Durban in conjunction with the Durban International Marathon.

The Athletics Mpumalanga team performed well at the recent ASA Marathon Championships, earning a bronze medal in the 40+ men’s category.

The 42.2km championships were held in conjunction with the Durban International Marathon in Durban on April 28. A total of six athletes represented Mpumalanga at the championships, hoping to make their provincial federation proud.

Lovers Hlatshwayo, Graham Malinga, Nthuthuko Maseko, Msawenkosi Buthelezi, Samuel Mathabatha and Shellboy Mavuso all took part. Hlatshwayo and Malinga were the only athletes to take part in both the 40+ category and the men’s open category.

Hlatshwayo, Malinga and Maseko’s performed excellently on the road, ensuring they finished third overall to earn Mpumalanga’s bronze medal. In the men’s open category, Mpumalanga’s team came fifth overall thanks to the efforts of Hlatshwayo, Buthelezi, Mathabatha and Malinga.

Each individual athlete’s times were:
• Msawenkosi Buthelezi (Volksrust MC) – 02:22:32
• Samuel Mathabatha (Bella’s AC) – 02:22:34
• Lovers Hlatshwayo (Nedbank LVCC) – 02:31:05
• Graham Malinga (Eskom AC) – 02:33:45
• Nthuthuko Maseko (Nedbank LVCC) – 02:34:36
• Shellboy Mavuso (Sasol MC) – 02:36:11.
