61-year-old Hazyview artist keeps passion for music alive

The musician has an album out and hopes to introduce it to listeners far and wide.

A 61-year-old musician, Patrick Matsane, is a versatile singer, songwriter and guitarist hoping to pass on his musical skills to youngsters while he offers refreshing music.

Matsane, stage name ‘Patamy’, is a kwaito, reggae and Afropop vocalist from Phola near Hazyview.

This independent artist is currently encouraging locals to listen to his latest album titled Emhlabeni, released in December.

“The album has 14 Afropop songs, some of which I worked on with other local musicians. I feel empowered to have such an album that will contribute to the local music industry and will showcase my talent. To have this album is a dream that became true, and I hope people feel inspired by it,” he said.

Matsane said he started his music career when he joined forces with a musical group called Mbube in 1980.

“We were 11 and made a name for ourselves with a song called ‘Amankonyane amnyama’. We toured for spectacular performances that amazed our fan base. I was introduced to the guitar in 1990. That is when I also began writing my own music with the aim to be a versatile artist.”

He said he never gave up on his music and was influenced by a lot of young stars who worked hard to perfect their craft.

“I also jumped on the amapiano genre and released a song called ‘Amantombazane’, produced by a local producer and musician, Nandzi. No matter how long it took, I finally had the opportunity to have my own music, which encouraged me to work on the Emhlabeni album.”

He said he is passionate about the entertainment industry, and that he had also ventured into comedy and acting.

“I still have dreams to be a notable role model in the community for people to not give up on their dreams, no matter how long it may take them. One thing I know is that passion never dies, and it will help you to wake up in morning to achieve your goals,” Matsane said.
