Mpumalanga MEC for education urges schools to create fair school governing body elections

Bonakele Majuba, the provincial MEC for education, said all schools are expected to start with the preparations towards the success of these elections.

The Mpumalanga MEC for education, Bonakele Majuba, has urged schools to create a favourable environment for free, fair, peaceful and transparent elections of school governing bodies (SGB), due to run from March 1 to 30 across the country.

He said this when he addressed a fully packed gathering of principals and current members of SGBs from Gert Sibande and Nkangala districts at HTS Middelburg on February 13. This follows the official launch of the elections by the minister of basic education, Angie Motshekga.

“We request schools to communicate with parents to appreciate the significance of these elections and to work with them from the onset to ensure full participation. Already, the Department of Education has finalised a number of due processes, which includes but are not limited to the development of the management plan, identification and appointment of provincial and district electoral officers and consultations with SGB associations,” Majuba said.

This year, we intend to make it our responsibility to create a stable environment for learning and teaching to take place in all our schools.”
