A brighter 2024 greets the Mafuwanes in their new home in Hazyview

The Mafuwane family was overjoyed to finally spend New Year’s under the same roof, after Build it Hazyview donated the building materials and some community volunteers built the house.

The New Year’s celebrations brought renewed happiness to Dumisane Mafuwane’s family, who could spend it together under one roof, a stark contrast to the preceding years.

After Build it Hazyview provided material for a two-room house and some community members volunteered to build it, it was recently handed over to the family. Some local businesses even donated some furniture to the family.

Mafuwane’s wife and children were forced to leave their dilapidated shack during the five years he tried to get the Department of Human Settlements to address their plight, without any luck. This meant the family was scattered among relatives while he stayed on in the shack to guard their meagre belongings.

Mafuwane couldn’t hold back the tears of gratitude when he received the keys to the house and saw his wife and kids return home. “I do not have enough words to thank the sponsors for what they have done for me and my family. I now have my family under one roof and can sleep peacefully. We have furniture. I must also thank Build it Hazyview for building the house, and Darrango Maile for getting the media involved in my situation. Now my problem has been resolved,” he said.

He added that his focus now is to find employment so that he can support his family. He told Hazyview Herald that he is willing to take any job on as long as he can put food on the table, as they are currently reliant on social grant money.

Build it Hazyview’s store manager, Fesinah Mohlala, said the donation was about giving back to the community they serve, especially in the area in which they are operating. “We have played our part as a business to give back to the community and we are appealing to other businesses to do the same.

The family still needs more assistance, since no one has a job and they are depending on social grant support,” she said.

She added that they are happy that the family has been reunited and could spend the festive season in better accommodations.
