White River man faces criminal charges following discovery of illegal firearms

Police uncovered weapons while attending to a domestic violence incident.

In an incident related to domestic violence in White River on January 3, the SAPS took swift action by serving a 21-year-old man with a protection order.

However, what began as a response to a domestic disturbance took a concerning turn when police officers suspected that firearms may be in the residence.

Upon this suspicion, SAPS members conducted a thorough search of the house, leading to the discovery of four firearms.

These included two hunting rifles, a shotgun, and a revolver. Brigadier Selvy Mohlala reported that the authorities also uncovered approximately 218 rounds of ammunition of various calibres during the search.

The situation escalated when the young man failed to produce the necessary firearm licenses.

He was promptly arrested and charged in connection with the illegal possession of firearms.

Currently, the police are investigating the individual, delving into the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearms and ammunition.

To determine whether these confiscated weapons have been used in previous criminal activities, the firearms will undergo ballistic testing.

The man appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court on Thursday January 4.

The legal proceedings will shed further light on the charges and potential consequences the young man may face.
