Masoyi community members host health activity against crime

A number of crimes have put the Masoyi area in the limelight. The Walk and Run Against Crime Campaign aimed to create awareness on the issues while encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

In a way to create awareness against crime in an area such as Masoyi and surrounds, community members geared up for the first-ever Walk and Run Against Crime on December 2.

The Masoyi area has been in the limelight for various reasons. One of the cases that sparked uproar was the slain Bontle Mashiyane who had been reported kidnapped. After a month, her mutilated body was found near her home in Mganduzweni in May 2022. Other cases that made the headlines was the 59-year-old man who was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a minor boy, and two Masoyi SAPS members who were attacked while on duty during an armed robbery in Chochocho.

The awareness campaign’s organiser, a sports and fitness enthusiast, Tonight Mapaputsi, said the purpose of the walk and run was to send a stern message to the criminals who target the communities from Mganduzweni to Hazyview. “We are tired as a community. We want to do all our best to tackle the crime we have in the area, such as car hijackings along the R538, housebreakings and the killing of women and children.”

The walk and run, which promoted a healthy lifestyle for community members, started at the Mahushu intersection on the R538, proceeded to the Swalala traffic circle and finished at the Dayizenza Plaza.

“We would like to thank everyone who gave their time to come and support the awareness campaign. It was successful, and we hope the message has reached those who are committing crime in our community,” Mapaputsi said.
