Ermelo informal settlement dwellers to benefit in Department of Human Settlement’s housing project

The project will culminate into integrated human settlements with serviced sites, subsidised houses and social amenities.

The MEC responsible for human settlements in the province, Speedy Mashilo, has called for effective service delivery that will translate into positive change in people’s livelihoods.

Mashilo made this call as he engaged with community members of Mabuza Farm Informal Settlements in Ermelo on October 15.

Accompanied by the executive mayor, Cllr Mapulane Nkosi, Mashilo introduced the informal upgrading project, which will culminate to integrated human settlements with 1 184 serviced sites, 1 176 subsidised houses and social amenities such as parks and a community hall with a childcare centre.

The community will, therefore, need to be temporarily relocated to another location for work to commence on-site, thus they were urged to co-operate with government to allow for the effective installation of services.

“There are over 400 households that are affected by the relocation. The relocation is an exercise in necessity, which will cost the government over R28m,” Mashilo informed the community.

He went on to introduce the appointed contractor to the community and appealed them to let them work in peace so that they can finish the project in record time.

“The implementation of this project is inspired by the concept of the district development model, which demands all government spheres to be involved in general development. It is for this reason that the municipality undertook to provide the bulk infrastructure,” added Mashilo.

“As the municipality, we commit to do our part to realise the full-steam development for this area. We have already appointed the service provider for bulk infrastructure provision,” confirmed Nkosi.

Community members reacted with zeal and joy to the introduction of the contractor and imminent commencement of the development.

“We are elated with this development. The planned provision of parks and recreational facilities are commendable,” said Sthembile Dlamini, a community member.

She added that the planned school will surely change lives of their children as they currently have to travel to the nearest townships for school.

A similar development is expected to happen in Coronation and Likazi informal settlements in eMalahleni Local Municipality, aiming to bring about habitable environments to informal dwellers.
