Barberton woman hosts talk show to encourage sexuality

The talk show created a platform for men and women to deliberate about sexual issues that may contribute to gender-based violence in relationships.

A talk show about sexuality as a way to tackle gender-based violence (GBV), created by a local radio personality, Bongie Mkhabela, allowed women and men from all backgrounds to share their experiences about sex and modern relationships.

Mkhabela said that being vocal about sex preferences and healthy relationships can help individuals fight GBV.

The inaugural talk show took place at the African Rest Lodge in Barberton on Saturday October 14. It has no official name as yet.

Various topics were covered by inspirational speakers such as Alex Mthethwa, who spoke about the importance of communication and freedom between a couple, Nonhlanganiso ‘Soul Rose’ Nkosi deliberated on how couples can spice up their intimacy, Stanley Mashaba addressed the importance of a spiritual life in a relationship and Bless Shongwe spoke about issues of self-esteem and the danger of self-rejection.

“There is a long list of aspects that play a role in the root of GBV in relationships, and I believe sex is one of them. The lack of proper intimacy in a relationship can lead to divorce, cheating and abuse. This open discussion allowed the attendees to be speak out about such things,” Mkhabela said.

She said the talk was inspired by the love she had for her body, her skin and the aim to be attractive all the time. “This is a platform I want to host annually to also encourage everyone to love and embrace themselves,” she said.
