60 pairs of school shoes donated during cleaning-up in Likazi

Multiple community programmes taught the learners about the importance of recycling and keeping a clean environment.

Imvelo Recyclers, the Zonda Insila Programme and the Community Work Programme recently gathered at Thandulwazi Primary School in Likazi to conduct a cleaning campaign, and donated 60 pairs of school shoes that were sponsored by US travellers, Michael and Renolda Currie.

One of the organising members of the cleaning campaign, Portia Mathebula, said a local elderly man sponsored dignity packs for some of the learners.

“It was a joyous day as the learners were left with smiles on their faces. We taught them about the importance of protecting the environment by recycling and not littering. If we successfully make the children aware of the importance of a clean environment, they will be able to carefully evaluate every decision they make. These young people will also be able to correct elders if they see something harmful being done to the environment,” Mathebula said.

She appreciated all the donors for taking a stand in empowering the lives of the learners, especially the underprivileged ones. The aim of the campaign was to reduce pollution and waste, and realise the benefits or sorting garbage for recycling and reusing.

“The learners will remember the importance of discarding bottles and sharp objects properly so their new shoes are not damaged, and use their toiletries so they are clean to avoid contracting diseases caused by an unhealthy environment.”

Mathebula encouraged the community to assist in managing litter and to make use of the landfills designed for waste instead of dumping garbage illegally on the sides of the roads.
