Steenbok artist aims to enjoy live music with devout patrons

Themba J Fundama says he is ready to do live performances and jam sessions around Nkomazi this season.

Spring has sprung, and what better way to embrace the season than coming together with friends on a Sunday afternoon to jam out to some live music over food and drinks?

Themba J Fundama is a musician who is currently serenading music lovers in Nkomazi with live Afro-soul performances.

Fundama grew up in Steenbok. He had exposure to live music through his church, Steenbok Emmanuel Assemblies, where he says his love of musical instruments was greatly illuminated. According to him, this is also the reason why he has decided to stick to gospel and Afro-soul in his performances.

“I have so many artists who inspired me to do what I do today, including John Legend and Vusi Nova. I have since discovered there’s no life without music. People need music for all seasons of their lives, whether they are celebrating an achievement or mourning a loss. I have sung at occasions where people were at their happiest, and I have also performed before the most heartbroken audiences, and every chance is fulfilling. It’s never just a singing session for me, it is ministry for the soul,” said Fundama.

The 31-year-old is a member of the well-known Nkomazi gospel group, Indumiso, and says this helps him to keep in check with his Christian values. “My faith is very dear to me. Being a member of a gospel group helps to keep me in balance, but Afro-soul is my first love. My biggest aspiration is to host a big event. It would be a one-man show in which I perform my own songs as well as the covers I do.

“It is also a dream close to my heart to be able to get a producer such as Afrotraction who would help me take my dreams to the next level. I am also part of a band called The Tribe; we have brought all our talents together to ensure that we give people the best live music anyone could get in the entire Nkomazi.”
