Mpumalanga education says classroom damage will not affect learning proceedings

The damage to infrastructure was caused by recent strong winds in some parts of the province. The department has already sent out teams to the affected schools to advise on the best course of action going forward.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education (DoE) said there are some schools in the Gert Sibande and Nkangala districts that were damaged by the strong winds on August 26.

According to the DoE’s spokesperson, Jasper Zwane, these include but are not limited to Elusindisweni Primary School, Mphanama Secondary School, Izimbali Boarding School, Nganana Secondary School, Violet Jiyane Secondary School, Kaduma Primary School and Magotshwa Secondary School.

On August 28, Zwane said the damages are not affecting the trial exams that are under way. “A team of department officials is visiting the affected schools to assess the damage and to advise on the steps to be undertaken. The schools have made necessary arrangements and the damages are not to the entire infrastructure, so there are still classrooms for Grade 12 learners to write exams and space for other learners to continue with their lessons. The department will work with the school governing bodies to ensure the safety of learners and staff and to make sure that learning and teaching are not severely affected.”

Zwane said the damage to infrastructure poses a challenge considering the huge infrastructure backlog that the province already has.

“The department will provide regular updates on the developments and the cause of action to be undertaken.”
