Seven suspects arrested for possession of suspected stolen good in Marite

The suspected stolen goods were recovered from houses close to where the hijacked truck was discovered.

Seven suspects, aged between 21 and 38, were arrested at Marite on Tuesday August 29 for possession of suspected stolen goods.

According to the provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, Crime Prevention members received information about a truck that was hijacked in Marite at about 07:15. The officers responded to the matter.

“During the search and investigation they found a truck abandoned at Mandiyane near Marite. Upon further inspection of the truck, they realised that it was empty of all goods, worth about R800 000. Members also discovered that the truck had a bullet hole on the passenger’s side and an empty cartridge found at the scene,” he said

Mohlala, added that the police continued with their investigation and conducted a search at the nearby houses. They recovered various stolen items, including wet wipes, clothing, batteries, nappies and shoes.

“The preliminary investigation by the police indicated that the items were supposed to be delivered to various shops around Bushbuckridge. Later, the driver managed to go to Marite Satellite Police Station and opened a case of armed robbery. The driver informed the police that his colleague sustained injuries from a shattered truck window glass as a result of a shot that was fired. The recovered items were confiscated for further investigation,” explained Mohlala.

He also said the suspects are expected to appear in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court today, August 31 facing charges of possession of suspected stolen properties.

The police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against the suspects as the investigation continues.
