Mpumalanga Education warns public about scammers targeting job seekers

The Department of Education's spokesperson, Jasper Zwane, said there is not a single employment post within the department that is for sale.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education (DoE) has warned members of the public about an employment post scam that is occurring in certain parts of the province.

On August 18, the department issued a statement that this scam follows a number of vacancies that were recently advertised by the department.

The DoE’s spokesperson, Jasper Zwane, said, “The scam involves certain faceless people pretending to be members of school governing bodies, school principals and officials of the department. They go to the extent of asking for bribes in monetary terms from applicants for educator assistants, general school assistants or teachers’ posts, to secure employment appointments. These faceless people are so sophisticated and will do anything and everything to lure those who are seeking employment to fall for their scam. Communities and those who seek to be appointed within the DoE are urged to appreciate that there is not a single employment post within the department that is for sale.”

He said no amount of money must be paid as a bribe in order to secure a post appointment at any level of the department within the province.

“The employment of officials is free of charge to every citizen in any post in the Republic of South Africa, by law. Soliciting payments or bribes for employment is illegal and a corrupt act, which the department strongly condemns and will not tolerate. Members of the public are thus advised to be wary of these unlawful activities or scams and to report any such instances to the SAPS,” said Zwane.
