KaNyamazane Marathon Club hosts successful cross-country

KaNyamazane Marathon Club’s Pr Sipho Langa said he would like to see more people from townships and rural areas taking part in cross-country.

Runners of various age groups came out in their numbers to compete in the KaNyamazane cross-country meeting at Noma Nini Lodge in Plaston on Saturday July 29.

This event was sanctioned by Athletics Mpumalanga Cross-country and was hosted by the KaNyamazane Marathon Club.
It was one of the cross-country meets scheduled for this season for athletes to attempt to qualify for the Mpumalanga championships in Middelburg on August 19.

In the provincial championships, the athletes will compete against other districts in the province. The ones left standing will qualify for the SA Championships in Port Elizabeth in September.

The runners tackled various distances on this beautiful terrain: a 1km, 2km, 3km, 4km, 6km, 8km and 10km. About 205 athletes competed in various age categories, ranging from boys and girls under eight, to the more seasoned athletes in the 70s bracket.
The next event will be hosted by Ngodwana.

The founder of KaNyamazane Marathon Club, Pr Sipho Langa, said this was the first time they hosted the fixture. “Looking at the outcome of the event, we had a successful cross-country meet. We received assistance from people who are well experienced, and this made it easy for us to get it right. As a club, we are happy that we had this opportunity.”

Langa said he would like to urge locals to join these clubs. “I would like to see more people from townships and rural areas joining this kind of programme.”
