Learners from a KaNyamazane school benefit from Themba Hospital’s career expo

The aim of the career expo was to educate learners about the different professions they can study towards at a tertiary level, if they want to work in the health industry.

Themba Hospital hosted a career expo for Sitintile Secondary School learners on July 21.

The informative event had presentations by various healthcare professionals and exhibition stalls that gave them the chance to interact with the staff.

The learners had the opportunity to tour the hospital. They were taken through the different departments, including radiology, the laboratory, the pharmacy and they got a glimpse of the recently launched intensive care ambulance.

During the event, Dr Ntando Makhubela shared his own success story of how he went from being a petrol attendant to a medical doctor through a Nelson Mandela-Fidel Castro programme. This afforded him the opportunity to study to become a doctor in Cuba.

According to the hospital’s CEO, Thembisile Matsinhe, this initiative was to strengthen partnerships between the community and the hospital. “The aim is to give schoolchildren the platform to learn more about different career fields in the healthcare industry. This helps them gain insight into the working world and generally a corporate culture in the hospital environment. The activities included formal presentations by a team of health specialists, the allied health services, bursary unit of the Department of Health and the Mpumalanga Nursing College.”
