Department of Education gives update on progress of winter vacation classes

The Mpumalanga Department of Education said it set aside about R40m for the 2023 winter classes and it is happy with the development.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education (DoE) said it is pleased with the way the winter vacation classes are progressing. It released a statement on Wednesday, July 5 to give an update. The vacation classes started on Monday, June 26 and will proceed until Friday, July 7.

These winter vacation classes are held in 115 day centres and 11 residential camps for the 167 schools that have obtained below 70% pass rate in the 2022 National Senior Examination results. The department said it had set aside R40m to achieve this goal of hosting winter classes.

The targeted subjects are the 11 high enrolment subjects: mathematics, mathematical literacy, physical science, life sciences, economics, accounting, business studies, history, geography, agricultural science and English first additional language.

According to the DoE the best performing teachers were selected to teach at these classes.

“We are committed to providing our learners with the best possible support to enable them to improve their performance and to realise their potential,” said the MEC for education, Bonakele Majuba.

The MEC said vacation classes give the learners the opportunity to catch up and to prepare for the upcoming examinations.
Majuba visited Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School at Embalenhle in Secunda to monitor the classes and was impressed with the levels of preparedness.
