The Mpumalanga Department of Education conducted winter vacation classes from June 26 to 28.
It was held at 115 day centres and 11 residential camps, for the 167 schools that had obtained a below-70% pass rate in the 2022 National Senior Examination.
The targeted subjects were mathematics, mathematical literacy, physical science, life sciences, economics, accounting, business studies, history, geography, agricultural science and English first additional language.

According to the department, learners from the schools were provided with scholar transport and food. “We are committed to providing our pupils with the best possible support to enable them to improve their performance and to realise their potential,” he said.
As part of the monitoring progress, he visited the Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School in eMbalenhle in Secunda on June 20.

The department said only the best-performing teachers had been selected to teach during the vacation classes and each learner took a maximum of three subjects.
The residential camps housed the best-performing learners in mathematics, physical sciences and accounting.
According to Majuba, the classes were a valuable opportunity to improve their chances of success in the final examination.
