Bushbuckridge man receives 15 years’ imprisonment for stabbing uncle

Samkelo Mbowane attacked his uncle while on parole for murder and assault with the intent to cause harm.

Samkelo Mbowane (36) received 15 years’ imprisonment for the attempted murder of his uncle. Mbowane stabbed his uncle and nearly killed him in Goromani, near Calcutta, on November 1, 2022.

He was sentenced in the Mhala Regional Court in Thulamahashe on June 20.

During the attack, Mbowane was out on parole. He had been convicted and sentenced 10 years’ imprisonment for murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm in 2016.

According to a police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, an argument between Mbowane and his uncle broke out over meat and turned violent in front of some of the uncle’s friends.

“During the altercation Mbowane fetched a knife, which he used to stab his uncle multiple times. He sustained some injuries on one of his eyes, left arm, shoulder, neck and back. He was rescued by his friends who took him to Matikwana Hospital in Mkhuhlu for medical treatment.”

Mohlala said an attempted murder case was opened at the Calcutta Police Station and Mbokwane was apprehended at his home in Madras on November 4, 2022.

Correctional services was alerted and assisted in his arrest.

During his sentencing, the court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
