Mganduzweni youngsters march to commemorate Youth Day

The march's organiser said the purpose was to pay tribute to the Soweto Uprising of 1976 and to honour those students who were killed fighting for the liberation of South Africa.

Some young people marched the Mganduzweni streets on June 16 to celebrate Youth Day.

Afterwards, they went to the Phumelela Bible College for an informative workshop, to assist those who are unemployed, and they got to learn how to draft a CV. Some local young entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to share their stories on how they started their businesses.

They motivated the young people to embark on starting a business, and not to only depend on looking for employment alone.

During the workshop, local performers showcased their talents through music, poetry and indigenous games, and also performed some parts of the well-known drama Sarafina. The workshop was attended by various stakeholders, including GRIP, Legogote Clinic and the Seed of Hope.

The organisations came together to motivate the youth on how to live a healthy lifestyle, and educated them on issues such as rape and gender-based violence.

According to the march’s organiser, Prince Nyundu, the purpose was to pay tribute to the Soweto Uprising of 1976 and to honour the students who were killed fighting for the liberation of South Africa.

”We do not just want to celebrate by marching the streets and drinking, but we want to come together as young people to discuss some of the challenges we are facing in our community. This workshop and celebration were hosted because we acknowledge this day, as it was a transforming moment for the youth of our country. There is no better way to celebrate and to equip ourselves to discuss current issues.”
