KaNyamazane Marathon Club hosts fun run and walk

The club's founder, Pr Sipho Langa, said the event was a success, and they are planning to host another one.

On a quest to raise funds for their two annual big races competition, the KaNyamazane Marathon Club hosted a fun run and walk on June 17.

It started at KaNyamazane Stadium and ended back there. The club’s founder, Pr Sipho Langa, said the event was a success and it felt great to see something that he had prayed for coming true. “We planned it to be the way it happened and to us that is success.”

According to Langa, the event was hosted so that they would be able to raise funds.

“Due to financial challenges we face as a club, we decided to come up with ideas. We decided to start annual initiatives. This is the first one for 2023. Things would have been easier if we had official sponsors who paid for all the things that we need, however, we are struggling to get one. As a club, we have things we need to pay for, such as prizes, water and many others.”

Langa said the next fundraising events will be held in September and November. “Our main races are held in December and April.”

The marathon club came up when Langa was told he was unfit. He started to walk as his way of exercising, and then started hosting fun runs.

“After I saw the outcome of the changes I had made in my life, the idea of starting a marathon club came to mind. I then applied at Athletics South Africa. They approved the club and we launched it in 2018.”

After the fun walk and run the participants each received a medal. Langa said he would like to thank everyone who supports the club.

“We appreciate all the donations and support we receive from local businesses and the community.”
