Mbombela’s history enthusiast honours Nelson Mandela

Zoleka Mabena developed a board game with some fun facts about the life of Nelson Mandela.

M105 is a board game designed by a local, Zoleka Mabena, to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 105 birthday in July.

The game is similar to Snakes and Ladders, but has fun facts about Mandela’s history since his birth in 1918.

“I am inspired by the life of Mandela, because he worked to a level of greatness. His humility and strong character shaped the lives of many, including myself. I want people to continue being inspired by his life, while having fun through this game.”

Mabena said he approached the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which provided him with all the information there is to know about Madiba. “The foundation provided me with a 42-page book with historic dates and events. I strategically placed the information to make the game fun.”

Mabena said he is an innovator and marketer who has always been fascinated about South African history. “I also compiled a book with 103 speeches of Oliver Tambo’s that he delivered as the president of the ANC. The book was published in 2017 to celebrate his centenary.”

He said the board game is a pilot project, and he will create six more full-pack versions of it to commemorate more of Mandela’s birthdays until 2028.

“The full game pack of M105 has still to be launched on September 21. However, the board game is available for free and can be printed and played with a die.”

He requested local companies to assist by distributing the board game to disadvantaged communities where printing services are not readily available.
