Holiness Union Church in Shongwe celebrates 90 years of grace

The church recently shared its rich history with its congregants while celebrating the milestones achieved over the 90 years.

The Holiness Union Church’s (HUC) Shongwe Circuit celebrated what they call 90 years of grace at Mbongosi Lodging and Boarding on Sunday June 4.

The celebration was graced by guests from Mozambique, eSwatini and the Nkomazi Local Municipality’s (NLM) mayor, speaker and chief whip.

The circuit, which is under the leadership of Pr Nkosinathi Magagula, took advantage of the day to look back at its history as a reflection of its future plans. Among a number of establishments boasted by the circuit were Shongwe Hospital, Mkhuzweni Hospital, Mavula Holiness Primary School and Nhlambeni Primary School.

“The founders of this church believed that in order for a person to live a balanced life, both the spirit and the body need to be nurtured as best as possible. It was through these missionaries that the schools and hospitals were established, and we want to reflect on where they started so we can have a better understanding of where we are going. Ours is to continue where all these servants of God have left off,” said Magagula.

NLM’s executive mayor, Phindile Magagula, congratulated the church and urged them to pray for Nkomazi, particularly Driekoppies, citing that recent chilling events occurred around the area, and that they need divine intervention.

“Our society is confronted by numerous challenges that need the intervention and guidance of the church. The high level of crime and violence in our society are threatening to reverse the gains of our freedom. We see things that would barely happen before, there was an incident at Middelplaas in which the father brutally killed a one-month-old baby.

While we were still trying to come to terms with that, another incident followed, in which a man killed a one-year-old baby after having an argument with the mother. Just yesterday we were laying to rest a young boy who was shot and burnt in Driekoppies. These incidents all happened this year. This is a clear call that we need the church to pray for us, especially the area around Driekoppies. I am urging the church to hold hands and help us triumph against this pandemic,” said the mayor.
