Phola family in dire need after shack fire

The Leyane family of three sisters and their children seek help with basic needs after their belongings burn to ashes in their shack.

Three sisters and their children are in need of help from the community after their one-roomed shack caught fire in April.

Nkululeko Leyane, one of the sisters, told Mpumalanga News they were devastated to see their home going up in flames. She said they do not know what had ignited the fire.

“We all had gone out that morning and the children left for school. Some community members called to alert us of the fire, but we did not believe them until we saw the flames. We do not know the cause of the fire, although we suspect that it could be when the electricity came back after load-shedding,” Leyane said.

“We lost everything, including our IDs and birth certificates of our children, clothes and appliances. It was more heartbreaking to see the faces of our children when they came back from school and found their home destroyed.”

The sisters live with their four children aged 14, 11, five and 20 months. Leyane said the community in the Komane Village in Phola near Hazyview showed them great support by donating blankets, a bed and food items.

“The plan is to rebuild the shack and apply for new IDs. We believe we will be able to live with what we have as people also support us. We are all unemployed and lived off the little we could find,” Leyane said.

The Masoyi SAPS has requested support on behalf of the Leyane family. “We urgently ask people to support the family with clothes, food and materials to rebuild their home,” said the SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Nanikie Nonyane.

To donate, Nonyane can be contacted on 079 891 4808 or Leyane on 060 672 0980.
