Calcutta pageant queen advocates for gender equality

Portia Mthombeni said she wants to motivate young girls to be independent during her reign of Miss Calcutta Mpumalanga.

The young and enthusiastic Portia Mthombeni, also an advocate for gender equality and body confidence, is ready to motivate her peers to become dedicated youngsters.

Portia is Miss Calcutta Mpumalanga 2022 and is pleased to hold such a title at just 16 years old.

“It has been such a great experience as a mini public figure in my community. Although, the crown comes with its challenges, which some responsibilities clash with schoolwork, but I am steadfast to make it work,” Portia said.

She said she has been using her title to uplift her peers in the community of Mkhuhlu outside Hazyview. She is a Grade 11 learner at Makhosana Manzini High School.

“This is the beginning of the journey to advocate for the rights of young girls, such as the rights to proper education, basic needs, and safe homes and communities. I believe that society needs to build confident and independent women.”

Portia said she believes winning the Miss Calcutta Mpumalanga crown was a great start to her pageant journey. “I know I am capable of doing more for my community and winning more crowns as I advocate for my peers. I will continue hosting my ‘girl talks’ around Mkhuhlu.
