Mpumalanga swimmers pull out all the stops in national competition

Sixty swimmers from Mpumalanga recently participated in the National School Swimming Championships in Durban.

The MEC for culture, sport and recreation, Thandi Shongwe, has applauded Mpumalanga’s swimmers for pulling off a brave fight during the National School Swimming Championships in Durban from Friday to Sunday.

Team Mpumalanga was represented by 60 swimmers who flew the province’s flag high.

“We are really proud and humbled as a province following a stellar performance by our swimmers. They did not bring back scores of gold medals, but they made their presence felt during the games,” said Shongwe.

All nine provinces had sent their best teams, and only the best two participants from various categories of the competition were chosen to swim in the finals.

Team Mpumalanga were made up of 50 able-bodied and 10 para swimmers, who went pound for pound against some of the country’s best swimmers.

The Western Cape, Gauteng and the hosts, KwaZulu-Natal, had the largest contingent in the gala of 105 swimmers each.

Just like the athletics team that recently performed well during the national championships at the Germiston Stadium, the swimmers also proved their worth.

The athletics team obtained position 5 and 4 in the mainstream and learners with special needs categories.
