Barberton unites in clean-up to boost tourism

The clean-up campaign will be implemented at other areas within the Ehlanzeni District Municipality throughout the year.

The Ehlanzeni District Municipality’s executive mayor, Cllr Jesta Sidell, and the municipal manager, Dr Nontobeko Mahlalela, led a crowd of cleaners last Thursday, March 30, during the municipality’s clean-up campaign to tackle Barberton’s streets.

They were joined by several organisations in the public and private sectors to make the town a cleaner place and to boost its tourism sector.

The campaign followed the first clean-up that had taken place in Anderson Street in Mbombela two weeks earlier. Such campaigns will be implemented at various areas in the district this year, after which an assessment will be done by all local municipalities.

The aim is to tackle illegal mass dumping, littering and overgrown bushes.

Sidell said this is the municipality’s leading approach to ensure better waste management and refuse collection.

“We need to ensure our towns are environmentally safe and that the streets are kept clean at all times to attract investors to grow our local economies. We need to be a municipality that is accountable and able to keep its mandate. So far, the programme is going well, and there are plans to visit more areas. Once a month, as the programme continues, the mayoral office will be leading from the front to ensure all stakeholders are on the ground,” she said.
