Lowveld Walkers fights unemployment through walking and empowering

As a way to give back to the community that supports the organisation, the Lowveld Walkers hosted an event in which it assisted unemployed youth.

The Lowveld Walkers club has joined the fight against unemployment in its community through what it does best, walking.
On Saturday, this local organisation, in partnership with the Msogwaba Disability Centre and Unemployed Unashamed Youth Development, held an event with the aim to empower unemployed youth.

They gathered at the University of Mpumalanga, after which they walked to the Lydenburg road (Eskom substation). There were three categories, the 5km, 10km and 21km.

Joseph Mashaba, the founder of Lowveld Walkers, said this event was different because there were prizes and they had requirements for these winners.
The prizes included a R5 000 cash prize for one lucky winner. The participant had to be an unemployed Lowveld Walkers member or any unemployed participant on the day.

The money must be used to start up a business. A brief motivation letter on what the person will do with the money had to be submitted, too.
Mashaba said, “My plan is to empower the unemployed youth and students, while motivating those who wake up every Saturday to be a part of our walks. Some got laptops, sneakers and vouchers to shop at a mall and restaurants, data vouchers, studying lights, backpacks, toiletries, health packs and many more.”
The walkers came out in their numbers to be part of the first-of-its-kind event. There was a tie for the R5 000 cash prize.

“We added R1 000 to become R6 000, and divided it between the two winners, Nobuhle Zitha and Queeneth Mkhabela.”
Mashaba said there were other winners who also walked away with prizes.
“We would like to thank all the sponsors who assisted us by donating. Lowveld Walkers would not have held such a successful event without you all. To everyone who became involved, we appreciate all of you for all the work done, our partners, too.”
