Nsikazi community members continue to face water challenges

Some residents in Nsikazi said they have been facing water challenges since last month.

Some residents in the Nsikazi area say the water crisis there continues to affect their daily lives.
They said they had been without running water since February, though some say they do receive it for a few hours at night.

These community members are supplied water by the Nsikazi Bulk Water Treatment Plant in KaNyamazane.
On March 7, a community member from KaNyamazane said he only has running water between 18:00 and 20:00.

“The water is scarce and we do not have any during the day. Some of the residents in Tekwane are still without any water, and this is since the issue started a while ago.”

Some of the concerns that the residents raised are that they need to use the toilet, and without water, it is problematic. Another community member of Ext 5, Emfuleni, KaNyamazane, said they have not had water since last month, and they mostly rely on rainwater.

“We have to fetch water that flows on the ground, then use it for our toilets and laundry. We are forced to buy drinking water, and the water tankers that are said to be a relief, are not assisting us, because they do not come to our areas. Our children face a lot of challenges at schools because there’s no water there, either.”

The last update by the City of Mbombela on the Nsikazi South Raw Water Pump Station was on February 28. The statement reads, “River levels have gone down by 5m since last week. Sand is still going into pump station, but at a very low level. We have measured about 100mm of sand in the pump station chamber. It is not possible to pump with three pumps now due to sand still engrossing. The Hazyview Raw Water Pump Station is on and running – all is well.”

By the time of going to press, Ngala had not yet responded to the enquiry regarding the current state of the water treatment plant.
