University of Mpumalanga hosts seminar on emotional intelligence

This informative seminar on emotional intelligence was well attended by UMP students, academics, staff and various other guests.

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) hosted its first seminar for 2023 at the Mbombela Campus on Thursday February 23

The topic discussed was emotional intelligence as an essential ingredient of an effective people management strategy or strategies, for effective implementation of policies and good governance principles. It was delivered by the academic and leadership coach, Prof Dovhani Thakhathi.

During the event, he was introduced by ,Prof Vusi Gumede the dean of economics, development and business sciences.

This informative seminar was attended by UMP students, academics, staff and various other guests.
“Emotional intelligence refers to the capacity to be aware, control express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically, while people management refers to the practice of recruiting, training, engaging and retaining people to optimise their talent and maximise their productivity,” said Thakhathi.

According to him, leaders can resolve issues and avoid people exploding in anger.

“Learn to communicate if you want to excel in life and make sure you apply wisdom and strive for balance. Let’s solve problems, identify and manage different personalities. Always balance judgement and use various ways to motivate. To become better leaders, as managers and students, it’s important to apply balance of judgement and wisdom.”

Siyabuswa Campus’s director, Dr Emmanuel Tshikwatamba, delivered the note of thanks.
