University of Mpumalanga students start with orientation

The university's orientation week recently commenced for new students. However, not all applicants could be admitted. The spokesperson explains.

As the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) started with its orientation programme this week, some students were not admitted into the institution.

Some 210 000 people had applied to enrol for the 2023 academic year. As of February 10, only 1 086 students were registered.

The university’s spokesperson, Tlangelani Ubisi, said, “Based on our enrolment plan, we only have space for 2 817 first-time entering students and as a result, we will be unable to accommodate all those who have applied.”
Ubisi urged those planning to register for 2024, to apply on time. “We would like to advise students to apply on time when we open applications and take into consideration the Admission Point Score for their preferred qualifications before applying.”

The new students received a warm welcome from the vice chancellor, Prof Thoko Mayekiso, and the staff. Mayekiso said the university is committed to the holistic development of students. “We hope that your years at UMP will determine your future and the role you will play in this country, this continent and this beautiful planet,” she said.
