Kwaggafontein police investigate Christmas Day fatalities

A manhunt has been launched after two men were killed.

The SAPS is investigating two deaths that occurred at a tavern in Kwaggafontein in the early hours of Christmas Day. One of the two male victims was reportedly torched inside a VW Citi Golf after allegedly being severely assaulted in what appears to be an act of retaliation.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the Kwaggafontein SAPS was notified about the incident in which two persons were killed.

“When the police arrived at the scene, they reportedly found one of the victims still burning inside the Golf,” said Mohlala.

He said most of the man’s upper body had been severely burnt.

“Emergency medical personnel, including fire and rescue workers, were also summoned to the scene. However, the victim could not be saved. He was unfortunately certified dead by the paramedics. The other victim, who had sustained gunshot wounds, was certified dead too,” Mohlala said.

He said a preliminary investigation had so far revealed allegations that the man who had been torched in the Golf, had earlier allegedly fatally shot the other victim.

“He was allegedly assaulted by a group of people. Afterwards, he ran to his car and climbed in, and that is when he was torched inside it. The victims have not yet been identified.”

Mohlala said, “No arrests have been made yet. A manhunt has been launched for the suspects. We urge anyone with information that may assist in the investigation to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, or to send information via the My SAPS app. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.”

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela, has condemned the killings.

“The incidents happened in the early hours, when liquor stores were supposed to have closed for the day. I promise that law enforcement authorities will deal ruthlessly with anyone who chose to break the rules by encouraging illegal activity, and that individual will not be spared.”
