Stoning of bus windows proves to be a thorn in Buscor’s side

Nkomazi remains a place that has seen many of its bus windows being smashed out with stones, while other places like White River and Mbombela have shown a decline in this from the previous year.

The bus transportation company Buscor is seriously concerned about the increasing incidents of its buses being stoned.
According to reports released at the end of October, 36 buses have been reportedly been damaged since the beginning of the year. Nkomazi continues to have the highest number of stoned buses this year, while White River and Mbombela have seen a drop from last year. Most cases are reported to have occurred during community strike actions.

“We are very disturbed that people still continue to stone buses, when it is the most reliable form of transport for them. This negative behaviour persists despite our repeated attempts to reach out to communities through the media and community gatherings. It appears that our efforts have been ineffective,” said Buscor’s public relations officer, Thomas Lubisi.
Lubisi said a bus is an asset that belongs to the community, hence it should be protected at all times.
“The stoning of buses does not only damage it, but it might also cause injury to the passengers or drivers. The very same people who stone the buses will be crying and complaining of the cold during winter or the rainy season as the buses will not have windows.”
Lubisi said the stoning is a serious crime as people might be arrested or prosecuted.

“This is a case of malicious damage to property and people might be arrested for such. As we approach the festive season, we plead with parents to talk to their children, because we have noted that this persistently bad behaviour is mostly committed by them,” said Lubisi.

He urged people to stay safe from Covid-19. “Following the recent reports regarding the increase of Covid-19 cases within Ehlanzeni, we urge commuters to be safe at all times and follow all the protocols, as this disease is still with us. People should also continue to get vaccinated.”
