Mpumalanga DA protests against rising food costs

The Mpumalanga DA submitted a memorandum of demands to the Department of Social Development in which it outlined its grievances and suggested solutions.

The Mpumalanga DA picketed at the Mpumalanga Legislature today, November 16, over the rising cost of food.

The provincial DA leader, Jane Sithole, said they were marching to the provincial Department of Social Development (DSD) to raise their concerns.

According to the party, the rising cost of food has a devastating impact on the province’s people who struggle to feed their families and gain access to even one meal a day.

They handed over a memorandum of demands to the MEC for the DSD, Lindiwe Ntshalintshali. “We are unable to afford food. We would like to ask the government to intervene, as we cannot afford to put food on the table. We are saying there is something the provincial government can do to assist, and we have highlighted this in the memorandum,” said Sithole.

Ntshalintshali said the memorandum has proposals and solutions. “It is the same as the one the DA leader [Sithole] has submitted to us. We always make sure that we do not put partyism into it, things like saying that I am ANC or DA, because hunger cuts across. This is why we are taking it serious.”

She said they would formally respond to the memorandum.
